Thoughts from Rollercam HQ on Exploring the Outdoo
Our company designs and manufactures things familiar to people who love the great outdoors. But our unique cam straps and rope rollers are merely tools for getting out there and enjoying what the planet has to offer. As avid outdoor enthusiasts, we often find ourselves asking an important question: how far do we want the outdoors to take us?
This planet we live on is an amazing thing. From mountains to jungles and deserts, nature's diversity is astounding. As a casual fan of the great outdoors, you could spend your weekends exploring and never scratch the surface. You will experience more as a full-time overlander, but you still couldn't cover every inch of this amazing planet in a lifetime.
We know how easy it is to get hooked. You take that first overlanding journey or climb that first mountain and you cannot wait to get back at it again. If you've been at it long enough, you are probably the kind of person who only feels truly alive when out in nature and away from cell service.
Keeping It Close to Home
For the record, there is no right or wrong here. That's the beauty of enjoying the natural world. It welcomes you to take in as much as you want. So maybe you are the type of person who likes to keep it close to home. That's great.
We call Utah home is the basecamp for the Rollercam® HQ when we’re not out in the desert. If you are not familiar with the Beehive State, it is largely rural and home to some of the most incredible national parks. There is a tremendous amount of land in Utah to explore. Using Salt Lake City as a home base, you could spend years investigating Utah's wilderness on the weekends.
Exploring the Lower 48
Some of us in the overlanding community eventually get this idea in our heads that we are going to explore the lower 48 entirely. We start making plans to visit every state within so many years. Then off we go, on trips to Overland Expo or cross country explorations for months at a time.
Given that cross country trips are longer and more involved, we need to invest in more equipment. So above and beyond cam straps and Roperollers, we need to think about things like first aid, survival tools, spare parts, water storage, cooking equipment, etc.
Exploring Different Continents
An even smaller number of us cover the lower 48 and still can't scratch that itch. So now it's time to start exploring different continents. This is when overlanding reaches a next level . Whether it is traveling to South America to see the Amazon or heading off to Europe to climb some of the most famous mountains in the world, going intercontinental means ramping things up even further.
Imagine traveling through the jungles of Mozambique in the weeks just prior to the start of the rainy season. Or how about exploring the most remote areas of Argentina? With the right equipment and enough desire and passion, you can let the natural world take you to places you never dreamed of before.
Whatever Makes You Happy
The point of all of this is to say that you do whatever makes you happy. Don't let anyone else dictate how you're going to enjoy the natural world. If you are happy with a weekend camping trip out on the Wasatch Front, go for it. If your idea of exploring the great outdoors is hiking through the Appalachians with nothing but a backpack, go enjoy yourself.
Remember that things like cam straps and buckles are just tools. The same goes for overlanding rigs. Ultimately, the relationship between you and the natural world is completely separate from the tools and equipment you buy. How far will you let that relationship take you?
